Bataan, Busts and Beiber at the Bellas Artes Outpost
A commentary on the intersection of pop culture and aspects of religious devotion, Bellas Artes Projects artist-in-residence Paul Pfeiffer stages an exhibition entitled Incarnator at the foundation's outpost. Focusing on Justin Beiber's cult-like status, pinnacled by his song 'Despacito,' Pfeiffer collaborated with master santo maker Willy Layug in Bataan to produce fragmented sculptures of the singer's body parts and likeness. The name of the exhibition borrows from the spanish term encarnador which refers to the last step in the santo making process, the layering of paint to create a skin-like finish, the final technique of transforming image to icon.
Paul Pfeiffer: Incarnator runs until 6 October 2018 at the Bellas Artes Outpost.
